History of the Sacré-Coeur in Paris

Visiting the Sacré-Coeur in Paris

The way up is an experience in itself. At the foot of Montmartre Hill begins the famous staircase with over 220 steps. It is a tough climb, but along the way you are rewarded with a beautiful view of the city and the lively atmosphere of the square below.

Think the stairs are too much? Then there’s an easy option: the Funiculaire de Montmartre. This cable car takes you to the top in a few minutes and can be used simply with a metro ticket.

Once at the top, you will be rewarded with stunning views of Paris and the beautiful basilica itself. Whether you come for the tranquility, the views or the impressive architecture, the Sacré-Coeur in Paris is definitely a place you must have seen.

Climbing the dome of the Sacré-Coeur

If you still have energy left after the climb up, it is definitely worth visiting the dome of the Sacré-Coeur as well. The entrance for this extra climb can be found on the left side of the basilica. You will need a separate ticket for the dome, which you can buy on site at the entrance to the dome.

Admission costs about €7 per adult (prices may vary, so check the current price upon arrival). Via a narrow spiral staircase of about 300 steps, you climb all the way to the top. Once at the top, you are rewarded with spectacular views of all of Paris – on a clear day you can even see the Eiffel Tower and far beyond. Admission to the basilica is free. So you don’t need a ticket to see the Sacré-Coeur inside.

Want to climb the dome for a stunning view of Paris? If so, you’ll need a ticket. A ticket to the dome costs about €7 and is only available on site at the entrance to the dome.

How do you get to the Sacré-Coeur in Paris?

The Sacré-Coeur is located on Montmartre Hill and is easily accessible by several means:

1. By metro: Get off at Anvers stop (line 2) and walk towards the basilica. From here it is about a 10-minute walk to the foot of the hill. You can also get off at Abbesses (line 12), but keep in mind that this stop is lower and you still have to go up a bit.

2. By the Funiculaire de Montmartre: Don’t feel like climbing? Then take the cable car from Place Saint-Pierre. This one will take you up easily and you can just use your metro ticket.

3. On foot: Fancy a bit of a challenge? Then climb the famous steps from the Place Saint-Pierre. Along the way, enjoy the view and the cozy atmosphere.

4. By bus: Several bus lines stop nearby, such as lines 30, 31, 54, 80 and 85.

Our experience at the Sacré-Coeur in Paris

We found a visit to the Sacré-Coeur in Paris absolutely worthwhile. Once you get to the top of the hill, you are treated to stunning views of the entire city – that alone is a highlight. The basilica itself is impressive, both outside and inside. The large mosaic and the peaceful atmosphere inside were especially impressive.

What we personally found less is that it is very crowded and touristy around the steps and the square. You are regularly accosted by street vendors, which somewhat detracts from the experience. But don’t let that stop you, because once at the top and inside, it is a beautiful and special place that you really must have seen during your visit to Paris.

Our tips for your visit to the Sacré-Coeur

After our own experience, we have a few helpful tips for you:

1. Go early in the morning or later in the evening
That way you avoid the crowds and enjoy the view and atmosphere of the basilica in peace.

2. Use the Funicular if you want to skip the climb
The cable car will take you up easily and a regular metro ticket will do.

3. Explore Montmartre after your visit
Stroll the cozy streets and discover the atmospheric Place du Tertre, where artists sell their work.

4. Beware of street vendors near the stairs
Around the stairs and square, there are often pushy street vendors. Walk quietly and do not accept their offers to avoid unpleasant situations.
