What is the Palatine Hill?
The Palatine Hill, or Palatine for short, is one of the seven hills on which Rome was built and perhaps the most important. According to legend, Rome was founded here by Romulus. Centuries later, Roman emperors built their impressive palaces there, the ruins of which can still be seen.
In Roman times, the Palatine was an upscale residential area and the political heart of the city. Today, you walk among remnants of temples, imperial buildings and gardens. It is a special place where you really step back in time and can well imagine how powerful Rome once was.
What can you see on the palatine
On the Palatine Hill you will find many impressive ruins and beautiful viewpoints. Here are a few things you should definitely not miss:
1. The House of Augustus – The home of the first emperor of Rome. You can still admire original murals here.
2. The imperial palaces – Remains of huge palaces where emperors such as Tiberius and Domitian lived.
3. The Farnesina Gardens – Beautiful landscaped gardens added later and a nice place to walk around for a while.
4. View of the Roman Forum and Colosseum – From the Palatine you have one of the most beautiful views of these famous places in Rome.
Above all, take the time to walk around quietly. There is much to see and because of the altitude, it is often just a bit quieter than at the Colosseum.

Is a visit to Palatine Hill worthwhile? Our experience
During our city trip to Rome, we bought a ticket to the Colosseum, which also gave us access to the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill. The Palatine is a historic place where you can walk through the ruins of imperial palaces. What makes it extra special is the magnificent view of the Roman Forum. Like the Colosseum and the Forum, the Palatine Hill is really one of those places you must have seen while visiting Rome.
One downside, however, was the crowds, especially at the entrances and in the popular parts of the site. Although at first glance the Palatine Hill seems like a quieter alternative to the Colosseum and Forum, we found that it could still be quite crowded, especially in high season.
Our tips and practical information for your visit
After our visit to Palatine Hill, we have a few helpful tips for you that can make your visit even better:
1. Best time to go:
Palatine Hill is a popular sight, but because it is a little higher up, it is often quieter than the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Morning is usually the best time to go, as it’s not too crowded yet and you’ll have most of the sights to yourself. Also, try to avoid the crowds of the tourist season (July-August).
2. Duration of your visit:
An average visit to the Palatine takes between 1.5 and 2 hours, depending on how detailed you want to explore the ruins. If you also want to enjoy the gardens and views, feel free to stay a little longer.
3. Comfortable shoes:
Since you will be walking a lot on stony paths and uneven ground, it is important to wear comfortable shoes. Some sections can be a bit steep, so good walking shoes are recommended.
4. Provide water:
There are no places to eat or drink directly on the hill itself, so bring a bottle of water, especially if you go in the summer. There are fountains where you can refill water, though.
5. Toilets and facilities:
There are restrooms on Palatine Hill, but it is good to know that the facilities are not always state-of-the-art. So it is useful to keep this in mind in advance and plan your visit accordingly.
